Abstract
The greatest challenge facing students in higher institutions of learning in Nigeria today is their poor ability to read materials and understand them. This is because students have not been properly trained to approach materials with a view to supping out relevant information there from. This inability resulted into the students’ failure to benefit from the vast body of knowledge contained in such materials for the proper and correct application of such knowledge to solve societal problems and achieve meaningful development especially in this era of scientific and technological race in the world today. The focus of this paper is therefore centered round the various approaches that students could apply to understand content areas in their fields of study. The paper also suggests some guidelines for the language teacher on the ways and methods to be used to train students to approach materials so as to be able to extract relevant information for the general understanding of their areas of study.
