Abstract
Social studies education as a problem solving discipline has been identified in the National Policy of education (2016) as an indispensable tool to the understanding and internalization of social norms and values of the community and of the country as a whole. Having this in mind this study examined the relevance of instructional effectiveness in social studies by the classroom teacher. To this end, this study also discusses these teaching materials in respect of their meaning, types, principles for selecting and usage, all in relationship to classroom work in social studies education. The study came to the conclusion that if instructional materials are prepared ahead of time before the lesson, with the lesson’s objective in mind and there is minimal interference by the school authority and ministry officials, Instructional materials can enhance the teaching of social studies as an aid to the achievement of national goals, human development, national integration and nation building.
