Abstract
The armed group, Jama’atu Alis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad, commonly called Boko Haram carried out series of brutal attacks from 2009 in an effort to establish extremist Islamic rule in Nigeria, especially in the Northern region. So many schools in the region were destroyed and hundreds of students, teachers, lecturers and other education personnel killed. This paper examines the impact of Boko Haram insurgency on the development of educational system in Nigeria using the North East of Nigeria as a case study. Data used were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The theoretical framework used in this discourse is the clash of civilization by Samuel Huntington in 1993. The causes of Boko Haram instigated. Conflict and violence in the North East are stated in the paper to include among others, resistance to Western education and defining and advancing scared
Islamic values. The nature of Boko Haram attacks on schools, students, teachers, lecturers, etc are also highlighted in the paper. The negative impact of the activities of the extremists on the development of education are identified in the paper to include, withdrawal of pupils and students from school, using schools as detention and killing centres, to mention but a few. It is concluded in the paper that the actions of the Boko Haram group are barbaric and extremely wicked, inhuman and unacceptable; as such, it is imperative for the good people of Nigeria, the government and the military to rise up and wage war against this enemy of our country. The following recommendations among others are proffered in the paper, security checkpoints should be mounted on roads leading to where schools are located. This will help to protect lives of pupils, students, lecturers and other education personnel; also government should deploy well equipped security forces to schools at all levels-primary, secondary and higher institutions in the North-East.
