Abstract
This study was carried out in order to ascertain the effects of socioeconomic status of parents on the academic performances of senior secondary school students in Mathematics in Zaria. To carry out this study, two research hypotheses were formulated. An ex-post facto research design was used as the design for this study; two hundred and twelve (212) students were used as sample. A reliability coefficient of 0.70 was achieved using Cronbach’s alpha reliability test. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire; Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used by applying Spearman rank order correlation to analyze the research questions at 1% level of significance. Results from the study indicated that there is a relationship between students’ academic performances in Mathematics and socioeconomic status of parents. It also revealed that students who are exposed to educational facilities and materials that aid the learning of Mathematics do better than those who are not exposed to such facilities. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that schools should be well equipped with effective teaching aids and other educational facilities that aid teaching and learning, enhanced teaching method should be employed, favorable teaching and learning environment should be provided.
